SCIATICA RELIEF FAQ

Back pain due to sciatica can impact your quality of life. You may find it difficult to work, sleep or keep up with your normal routine.

Naturally, you’ll have questions on what this condition is and how it can be managed.

At Bluegrass Chiro, we have been sharing the benefits of chiropractic care with residents of Winchester, Elizabethtown, and all of KY for many years.

The following are the answers to questions our chiropractor frequently receives regarding sciatica.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition caused when structures in your spine impinge sciatic nerve roots. Your sciatic nerve is the longest in your body. It runs from your lower back down your hips, buttocks, and legs to your feet. This nerve is connected to your spinal cord by nerve roots threaded within your spinal column and is responsible for mobility and sensory function in the lower part of your body. Pressure on this nerve can cause extreme pain and hinder body function.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Roots to Become Impinged?

Accidental injuries can cause misalignment of bones, joints, or discs in your spine. As these structures shift out of position, they can press on nerve roots and cause pain. Herniated discs are a common cause of sciatica. Chronic spinal conditions, degenerative disc diseases, bone spurs, and weak muscle support due to age can also contribute to sciatic nerve irritation.

What Are Some Common Sciatica Symptoms?

Pain is the most obvious symptom of sciatica. Pain may start in the lower back region and shoot down your buttocks and leg. You may also feel muscle weakness, numbness, or pins and needle sensation in your leg or foot. Sciatica pain can come on gradually or all of a sudden. It may be mild in nature or severe. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may find it difficult to move around.

How Is Sciatica Sciatic Nerve Pain Relieved?

After reviewing your medical history, our chiropractor will conduct a physical exam and possibly X-rays to determine the source of your pain. We’ll inspect your spine for misalignment that could be contributing to sciatica symptoms. This will enable us to outline a chiropractic care plan.

Your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine’s natural alignment and movement. Adjustments will also help move displaced bones, joints, or discs back into their proper position to take pressure off of your sciatic nerve. This will help alleviate pain and inflammation and enable you to move about more freely. Our chiropractor may also recommend corrective exercises to strengthen your lower back muscles. This will improve your posture and help keep your system in proper alignment.
